11 facts on consumer feeling around plastic

More than a third of consumers won’t buy products from companies that are known to have poor environmental standards, a survey from retail app Ubamarket claims.

  • A nationally representative sample of 2003 UK adults was asked about levels of plastic packaging for food and drink products. Around 82% said that the situation needed to change drastically.
  • Those aged 55 or over were most concerned with plastic use for food and drink products, with 90% saying the level was totally unnecessary and in need of immediate change.
  • Plastic pollution was considered to be the single greatest threat to life and the environment in modern history by 57% of people surveyed.
  • 77% felt that manufacturers and supermarkets were causing the most plastic pollution.
  • 44% of respondents claimed they actively purchased products that have less of an impact on the environment, even if they were more expensive.
  • However, 65% wanted to make the switch to more environmentally friendly options but felt they were significantly higher priced.
  • More than one third of consumers said they wouldn’t purchase from retailers and companies that are known to have poor environmental standards when it comes to packaging.
  • 42% wanted to be more environmentally conscious but felt they didn’t know enough about recycling and plastic pollution to make informed changes.
  • Black plastic, which is often unrecyclable and used by some supermarkets in the packaging of their produce, is resulting in 30,000-60,000 tonnes of waste per year, according to Ubamarket research.
  • 74% of consumers are not using the plastic they receive from Deliveroo.
  • Brits throw away over £200m worth of food as a result of overbuying.
