I guess soapnuts don't have much to do with food, but more about green living and helping the environment. However, you can wash your food in the soapnuts liquid to get rid of the pesticides.
Soapnuts are the shell of a tree grown in India or Nepal. They contain saponin, which is a natural substance that acts as a detergent when it comes in contact with water. No chemicals, dyes, fragrances, surfectants etc to irritate your skin. They are even great on cloth diapers!!!

Are they sold as the nuts themselves or do they extract the liquid? I am thinking about using them to make my own cleansers.

This site sells just the shells but they have instructions on how to make liquid.
