You know the old but true adage - To burn fat, you must burn more calories than you consume. So you go to the gym and jump on the cardio machines or treadmills and huff and puff away. How many calories are you burning?

Even though most machines come with a built in calorie counter, there is a significant amount of error associated with them. To determine the most accurate way, a heart monitor with a calorie counter is needed. If you do not have one, here are some accurate guidelines:

**The following is for a 190 pound person, using the machine for 30 minutes at a moderate intensity.

* Spin bike = 459
* Treadmill at 6mph = 437
* Elliptical = 420
* Stair climber = 378
* Upright bike = 345
* Boxing, using a heavy and speed bag = 341
* Rowing = 318
* Recumbent bike = 295

The one that surprises me the most is the Stair Climber. Of all machines, I consider this the most challenging. I would have ranked it first but such is not the case.

Please note that the calories burned are for 30 minutes. You can add additional calories burned via EPOC which are the calories burned post exercise. For cardio work, add approximately 20% more to the total.

If fat loss is one the to-do list, cardio is a must.
