This post is not directly related to nutrition but fits the theme as it does relate to a process that extracts various toxins from the body.

Recently I received a call from a good friend telling me about her latest and greatest find on her path to wellness. She had been complaining for awhile about feeling that her body was becoming listless with various aches and pains. Add to that an increasing concern that her memory was “not as sharp as it used to be”. Her Naturopath recommended an ION footbath. She took the plunge, so to speak, and has followed a regime for several months with great results. Based on her excitement, and the fact that similar symptoms were creeping into my life, I gave it a whirl, albeit skeptically.

After doing some internet research on the process and the science behind that process I found a few locations in Toronto that offered this service. I will not be so presumptuous as to try and explain the science so I leave this up to anyone interested in looking this up to come to their own conclusion as to the veracity of the claims……I just know that after two ½ hour treatments I feel a difference. The process is as simple as sitting in a chair! An Ionizer is placed in a tub of clear water in which you soak your feet. As the minutes pass you can see clear water turn opaque and then turn several dark shades of black, green, etc. This appears to be years’ worth of toxins leaving your body through the pores in your feet. It does not look pretty but as I was told, better to have it in the tub than in your body. I am committed to continuing the process until, as I have been promised, the amount of toxins extracted diminishes.

I would be quite interested in hearing from people who have either tried this process with success or with failure. Also, not being able to completely rid myself of my skeptic soul I would be interested if anyone believes this to be bunk-tell us why.

Here is a link to a spa that offers this service along with a brief explanation of what an ION footbath is and does. This is not an endorsement of this spa but since it is very near where I live, I am using their services.

The lady that I was getting them done at offered "Cell food" at the end of every food bath to replace the electrolytes that were lost. I also carry my own homeopathic remedy called "ReHydration" that helps the intake of water into cells which I recommend at every foot bath, and of course, purified water.

I have had the footbaths in the past. It is a controversial subject / treatment for sure but I also feel that if you feel any benefit or positive change as a result then go for it. In my research the jury seems to be out as to whether or not these machines are the real deal; there is information to support both schools of thought. The place that I was going to get my footbaths discontinued offering them due to machine upkeep (cleaning, replacement of parts) and issues with dehydration and electrolyte loss. Alot of people were experiencing headaches afterwards.

That's great, I love my new machine, although there is quite a learning curve! It's so useful to so many people, get the word out there!

I wanted to add some more things to my comments above:
1. I use the foot baths myself to help me lessen my reactions to food that I eat. I had to have a celiac test done, and had to eat wheat for the 2 weeks before (I have been off of wheat for 10 months) ... I was having such bad reactions to it. I tried an ionic foot bath just for fun, and that night I ate a personal thin crust pizza with NO REACTION! That sold me on it. I now do them weekly on myself. I haven't done one to myself in 2 weeks, and I am reacting to a lot of foods right now that I haven't been recently. I guess my toxins are high right now (it might have something to do with dumping old shampoos and cleaners down the drain today :-S)

2. I did one on my Mom for fun. She has bad knees and they ache most of the time. She said that since she had the foot bath done that her pain has gone away (although I haven't done it in awhile and it's creeping back in). Those toxins can affect lots of things!

I just had electrodermal screening done today...for the first time! Very interesting! Was I surprised to find I am sensitive to all my favorite foods? Of course not :) I was hoping I woudn't be though.......

I acutally do ionic footbaths, and yes, the colour may change due to metals in the water, air, and the apparatus being used. However, the sludge that forms on top of the water is all toxins from the body. After having my machine for several months now, I am realizing that the colour has more to do with the initial water put in as I am currently doing foot baths in two separate cities.

I also do electrodermal screening, and have the ability to analyze the scum and water from an ionic foot bath with my new machine. Since it is new, I haven't tried this yet, but it would be cool if it did!

I've never done the ion cleansing, but have heard of some good results from it. I say if it works for you, why not do it!

A note about the water changing colour:

We talked a bit about this in school and watched the water in the foot bath turn colour with no feet in it. This happens as a result of chemicals, salt and metals in the water itself, combined with the air. This color change will vary in accordance with the toxic and chemical components of the water and air given a particular geographical area.
