Yeast is a permanent resident in our bodies. This in itself is not problematic, in fact yeast is beneficial to us, but Candida problems occur when the beneficial yeast form of Candida Albicans is not kept in check by the body’s own helpful bacteria. It then overpopulates the intestines and mutates into its fungal form. This can occur due to poor diet, lowered immunity, overuse of antibiotics and use of oral contraceptives, steroids or antacids. As the fungus grows out of balance it is said to produce toxins which affect the mucosal lining of the intestines. The fungus then begins to grow roots which perforate the intestinal lining. This leads to leaky gut syndrome and a whole host of problems.

The following are some of the many symptoms of Candidiasis:

  • Allergies, chemical sensitivities
  • Anxiety, Hyperactivity, Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Brain fog
  • Diarrhea, chronic gas, and abdominal cramps alleviated by bowel movements
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Lethargy
  • Frequent urination
  • Hives and/or skin rashes
  • Psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis/dandruff, dry, itchy skin
  • Frequent yeast infections
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Headache
  • Cravings for sweets
  • Muscle weakness and bone pain
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Rectal itching
  • Sinus problems

The Solution

The following is a protocol designed to starve Candida Albicans and repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria.

Elimination

Sugar: All foods containing processed sugars should be eliminated. This includes cakes, sweets, jams, sodas etc……yes….that means chocolate too.

Natural Sugars: Fruits, in particular high glycemic index fruits such as banana and pineapple, dried fruits, fruit sugars (including fruit juices), and honey are also eliminated at the beginning of the diet. Ideally, dairy should also be avoided. Processed Foods and Simple Carbohydrates: White flour products, breads, pasta, white rice, crackers, chips and potatoes.
Fermented Products: Fermented or yeast containing foods such as bread, alcohol, soy sauce and vinegars.
Fungal Products: Mushrooms and cheeses.

This diet should be followed for a minimum of 4 weeks, however this depends on the severity of the problem and the response to the treatment.

Anti-fungals

There are many types of anti fungals that can be helpful in eliminating Candidiasis. While this may speed up the process of killing of the Candida, it isn’t always necessary. If the diet is followed properly it should work well enough on its own. Yeast feeds on sugar after all.

Cleansing

Drink plenty of water to help the body detoxify. 8-12 8 oz. glasses per day is recommended. Start the day with a cup of hot water and lemon juice and stock up on vegetables that inhibit the growth of Candida such as garlic, onions, cabbage, broccoli, turnip and kale

Repopulation

This is the re-introduction of healthy bacterial flora into the gut. It is an extremely important step in restoring good health and keeping future populations of yeast at a healthful level. Adding a good quality pro-biotic supplement is the way to do this.
