I have always had this sense that what we put into our bodies has almost an immediate effect on everything about us: the way we feel, look, and behave. I knew from my twenties that dairy affected me in a negative way but it took me a another few years to leave it. So, there is this pull between our wanting to be good to ourselves and the habits we have. I am interested in how we can train our minds and bodies to work together to heal ourselves.
About Me:
I was born in India and left when I was 6 and since then, have made Toronto my home, which I absolutely love! I attended the University of Toronto for both my degrees: first a specialist in South Asian Studies then a BSc in Physical Therapy. I have worked in Geriatric Rehab for almost a decade and the one thing I have learned is that we cannot escape our past-it catches up with. It rewards us with good health if we have taken care of ourselves but it can wreak havoc on our bodies and cause all sorts of impairments if we have neglected our bodies in our youth. Yet, there is also a tremendous ability of our bodies to heal, when we change our minds, our habits and our outlook on life. I have seen amazing older adults that have battled cancer, dementia and physical disabilities but at the same time, I realize that our healthcare really only deals with disease management. Everyday, I see my patients' with digestive problems that have food trays lined with milk products and wheat bread. Many of them who have had prolonged antibiotic treatment have never heard of probiotics and every ache and pain from arthritis is treated with stronger and stronger pain killers but no thought has been given to dietary changes. I am often disheartened when I see the elderly come in with a list that has over 20 prescription drugs. These are some of the reasons why I chose to study holistic nutrition. That's why I'm at the Toronto CSNN and I'm lovin' it! One day, I hope to see dark, green leafy vegetables on hospital food trays, or better yet, we'll only have wellness centers that focus on preventative health and maintaining wellness through education and advocacy. I hope I can be one of those people who can ignite change in our society. I want to meet other individuals who share this passion-educating the world about the amazing, therapeutic properties of food, which has the ability to change everything about a person. In my spare (hah!) time, I listen to music, I practice yoga, I visit my nephews, I hang out with my husband. Last year, my husband and some friends of ours and I organized the "Breathe Easy Weekend" for about 25 people at the Ecology Retreat in Hockley Valley. Our goal was to introduce people to meditation, yoga and healthy eating habits and to help them realize their full potential to change fundamentally through commitment. We hope to organize another one this summer.
